Sex offender beaten to death in prison riot

AGASSIZ, B.C. — One inmate is dead and a lockdown is in place after a major disturbance at Mountain Institution, a medium security prison in Agassiz, B.C. Saturday night.

At about 9:45 p.m., a number of inmates rioted in the compound’s gymnasium, breaking windows, threatening staff members and engaging in inmate on inmate violence, said Correctional Services of Canadas spokesman Dave Lefebvre.

Michael Andrew Gibbons, 39, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the institution following the late night violence.

Gibbons, deemed a dangerous offender, was serving an indeterminate sentence for sex offences. A second inmate was transported to an outside hospital, said Lefebvre. No prison staff were injured.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating the cause of Gibbons’ death, while Correctional Services of Canada will investigate the cause of the disturbance.

The lockdown at the 442-inmate facility, which includes cleaning up damages to the facility and a cell-by-cell search for contraband, will last indefinitely, Lefebvre said.

Former correctional officer pleads guilty to indecent exposure

Former correctional officer pleads guilty to indecent exposure

A former Frederick County Sheriff’s Office correctional officer will have to wait three months to find out his fate after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to an indecent exposure charge. Mark Anthony Baziuk, 30, of Frederick, was charged after an employee at the Target at 5437 Urbana Pike saw him exposing himself in the store’s parking lot, according to the sheriff’s office.

Surveillance cameras captured Baziuk the afternoon of Jan. 26 masturbating in his truck as customers walked by, Assistant State’s Attorney Melissa Bender told Frederick County District Court Judge Janice Rodnick Ambrose.

When Baziuk stepped out of the truck, police saw that his pants were unzipped, Bender said.

Baziuk, who is about 6 feet 8 inches tall and 270 pounds, graduated with the 22nd class of the Frederick County Criminal Justice Training Academy in 2004.

He resigned from the sheriff’s office Feb. 7, spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said Tuesday.

Ambrose postponed Baziuk’s sentencing in District Court for 90 days while he attends counseling. She also banned him from the Target on Urbana Pike

Florida Corrections Officer Arrested

Police arrested a Miami-Dade County corrections officer on Thursday morning for allegedly beating her boyfriend and holding him captive. There was a driveway full of cars and a locksmith at the door, but no one at the home of Capt. Clora Adkins would answer questions about what happened at her home Wednesday night. Adkins runs the Women’s Detention Center in Miami-Dade County.

Police said a text message alluding to infidelity sparked an argument between Adkins and her boyfriend of seven years.

According to the arrest affidavit, Adkins armed herself with a wooden candlestick holder, striking the victim across the head several times and then across the arm.

Besides the swelling, the victim also had bite marks on his body, according to police.

Police said Adkins would not let her boyfriend leave the house. They said, at one point, she grabbed his cell phone and smashed it on the floor so that he could not call 911.

Police said the victim eventually got away. They said he ran out of the house, went to a neighbor’s home and called police.

The Corrections Department said Adkins has a clean record. She has been with the department for more than 20 years.

The department released a statement on her employment status.

“The Miami-Dade Corrections Department has placed Captain Adkins on administrative leave pending the outcome of her court case,” the statement said.
