Polk deputy arrested for providing tobacco to an inmate

A Polk County deputy sheriff was arrested Thursday after authorities said he provided tobacco to an inmate at the South County Jail.

Ranjit Navonza Young

Ranjit Navonza Young, 26, of Lake Wales was arrested on a charge of smuggling or introducing contraband into a detention facility, a third-degree felony. Bail is set at $1,000. Young, who had worked for the Sheriff’s Office for about 11 months, resigned March 26.

Investigators said Young told them he picked up legal papers for an inmate and delivered them on March 13 — a violation of sheriff’s policy, which prohibit personal package deliveries. He also told deputies the inmate’s wife paid him $40 to make the delivery, they said. A sheriff’s news release said the package really contained tobacco.
