Former jail matron charged with sexual misconduct with inmate

BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) — A former Lawrence County jail matron has been charged with sexual misconduct in a relationship with an inmate.

Thirty-two-year-old Shauna Hawkins of Bedford is accused of having a sexual relationship with 35-year-old Kevin Edwards of Columbus while she was the jail’s chief matron and he was imprisoned for failing to appear in court on a charge of public intoxication.

She was booked into Lawrence County Jail on Monday and released on $500 bond. She resigned from the job last fall.

As chief matron, Hawkins oversaw the cleaning of the administrative area of the jail, ordered food and cleaning supplies, planned meals and managed the kitchen staff.

Hawkins is married to the son of former Lawrence County Sheriff Kent Hawkins.
