Guard pleads guilty in jailhouse rape

The highest-ranking guard on duty when an 18-year-old high school student was raped in a northern Kentucky jail pleaded guilty Friday to violating that man’s rights.

The Kentucky Enquirer said prosecutors recommended Grant County Jail guard Clinton Shawn Sydnor be imprisoned for 15 years when he is sentenced Dec. 8 in federal court on charges of conspiracy and a civil rights violation. The 30-year-old Falmouth resident faced a life sentence if found guilty at trial.

Sydnor also agreed to testify against two of his former coworkers in a trial set to begin Monday. Those men, Wesley Lanham and Shawn Freeman, also face life in prison if found guilty of conspiring to violate the victim’s rights.

Prosecutors allege guards solicited a group of convicted felons sexually assault the man while he was locked up in February for speeding and attempting to elude police.
