Two Former Covington Jail Guards To Go On Trial

The trial is set to begin for two former jail guards accused of allowing a sexual attack on a teenager in the jail.

Opening statements are scheduled Monday in U.S. District Court for the trial of Wesley Lanham and Shawn Freeman.

Both men are accused of pushing the 18 year old high school student into a cell with 14 inmates in February 2003 in the Grant County jail.

The teen was in jail for outrunning police.

Lanham and Freeman are accused of conspiracy and violating the teen’s civil rights.

Another former guard, Clinton Sydnor, has also been scheduled for trial, but he pleaded guilty Friday.

Prosecutors will recommend a 15-year prison term for him.

He has agreed to testify against the other guards.

A total of three inmates were later convicted in the sexual assault, and at least one of them has been subpoenaed to testify against Lanham and Freeman.
