Ex-prison official will face three trials in sex case

The former head of security for Virginia’s largest women’s prison will face 30 counts of having carnal knowledge of inmates divided into three jury trials.

Patrick Owen Gee, 45, appeared briefly in Fluvanna County Circuit Court yesterday for a motions hearing. Jeff W. Haislip, the county’s commonwealth’s attorney, considered trying all three cases together but withdrew his motion.

Gee is accused of having sexual relations with three inmates between Sept. 27, 2005, and July 31, 2007. It is a felony in Virginia for prison and jail employees to have sexual contact with inmates, even if it’s consensual.

During the time referred to in the indictments, Gee was head of security for the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, which houses 1,200 female inmates. He held that post from June 25, 2005, until he left the job and the state corrections system on Aug. 2, 2007. He had worked with the Virginia Department of Corrections since June 14, 1990.

Each count of carnal knowledge is punishable by up to five years in prison. The first of his trials is scheduled to begin on Oct. 16.
