West Tennessee sheriff pleads guilty in assault case

GAINESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Jackson County sheriff Kenneth Bean has pleaded guilty to two assault charges as part of a plea bargain requiring him to resign from office.

Bean received two years probation and can not run for public office for six years.

Earlier, Bean had pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of official misconduct, two counts of sexual contact with an inmate and three counts of sexual battery, all stemming from incidents at the county jail and sheriff’s office in Gainesboro.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said previously that Bean and other deputies had been sexually engaged with as many as 10 inmates since 2005. Three deputies pleaded guilty in the case to various charges related to improper sexual contact with female inmates.
