PANAMA CITY, FL (AP) — Authorities say a Bay County Jail correctional officer accused of smuggling contraband into a detention facility has been arrested.
Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen announced the arrest of a correctional officer this morning at the Bay County Jail as she attempted to introduce contraband into a detention facility.
Angela Lavonne Chiles, DOB 5/26/67, of 9304 Kelly Circle, Youngstown, was arrested at about 6 am today, November 5, 2008, as she entered the Bay County Jail to begin her shift. Chiles was found to be in possession of about 17 Alprazolam pills, a controlled substance, when she was arrested. Chiles was immediately terminated.
During the course of the investigation, it was learned Chiles had been introducing contraband, including tobacco products, into the Jail for monetary compensation. The packs of cigarettes were being re-sold between inmates for $30 to $50 dollars a pack.
Sheriff McKeithen was present at the time Chiles was confronted and personally arrested her.
“We are absolutely not going to tolerate this at the Bay County Jail, “ Sheriff Frank McKeithen said. “ Let this serve as an example to anyone who would consider such criminal behavior.”
Chiles was booked into the Bay County Jail on charges of Introduction of Contraband into a Detention Facility and Unlawful Compensation for Official Behavior.
