Jail communication leads to resignation

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) – An employee at the Vanderburgh County Jail resigns after an investigation into inappropriate communication with an inmate.

Authorities tell 14 news Elizabeth Wilson had been corresponding with inmate Terry Lay and that is against the jail’s rules.

Wilson worked for the jail for a year and a half as a confinement officer. She resigned last month.

Ex-Oklahoma Sheriff on Trial in Jail Sex Case

Opening statements began Tuesday for the trial of a former sheriff accused of using his influence over jail inmates and drug court defendants to demand sex from the women.

Former Custer County Sheriff Mike Burgess has pleaded not guilty to 36 charges of rape, rape by instrumentation, kidnapping, sexual battery and oral sodomy. He resigned in April.

Prosecutor Jim Swartz said six former jail inmates and drug court defendants will testify against Burgess, who faces up to 470 years in prison if convicted of all charges. Continue reading

Former Johnson City jailer pleads guilty to selling cigarettes to inmates

JOHNSON CITY (AP) — A former Washington County jailer has pleaded guilty to official misconduct for selling cigarettes to inmates for $100 per pack.

Timothy Ray Crain, of Johnson City, entered his plea to eight counts of misconduct on Monday and was sentenced to one year in jail in the plea agreement.

Crain told Criminal Court Judge Robert Cupp that the inmates approached him about buying the cigarettes.

Sheriff Ed Graybeal said the county jailer went into the inmates’ property to get their bank card, they gave him their PIN and he went to their bank to get the $100.

Although restitution was not part of the original plea agreement, the judge said he will order Crain to repay the $800.

Wisconsin Female Prison Guards Face Sexual Assault Charges

Two former female Oakhill prison guards are being charged with second-dagree sexual assault, even though they say the so-called victim — a prisoner — seduced them.

A year and a half ago, Correction’s Secretary Matt Frank said he would enforce a “zero tolerance” policy for sexual contact between prison staff and inmates.
