Former Filipino jail guard a suspect in ICRC kidnapping

A sacked prison guard was part of the armed gang who kidnapped three staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the southern Philippines, authorities said yesterday.

Rescuers have had no communication with the gunmen, who on Thursday snatched Andreas Notter of Switzerland, Eugenio Vagni of Italy and Filipina Jean Lacaba, and the hostages’ condition and location are unknown, Lieutenant-General Nelson Allaga of the Philippine Marines said. Continue reading

Ex-Okla. sheriff accused of coercing sex convicted of 13 felonies, acquitted of 23 others

A former Oklahomasheriff was convicted of second-degree rape and bribery Saturday in a case that accused him of coercing sex from female inmates and drug court defendants.

A Major County jury convicted former Custer County Sheriff Mike Burgess on 13 felonies, including five counts of second-degree rape and three counts of bribery by a public official. He was acquitted of 23 other felony counts that included second-degree rape, forcible sodomy and rape by instrumentation. Continue reading

Deliberations begin in trial of Oklahoma sheriff accused of coercing sex from female inmates

Okla. (AP) — Jury deliberations began Friday in the trial of a former sheriff accused of using his power over inmates and drug court defendants to coerce them into having sex with him.

Former Custer County Sheriff Mike Burgess has pleaded not guilty to 36 charges of rape, rape by instrumentation, kidnapping, sexual battery and oral sodomy. His attorney has said the accusers are either lying or the sex was consensual. Continue reading

Guard pleads not guilty in inmate beating case

A guard who has already testified in court that he “lost it” when he punched a prisoner at the St. John’s lockup last March is pleading not guilty in his own assault trial.
