Attorney accused of smuggling pot to inmate

A 60-year-old defense attorney had been smuggling marijuana and cigarettes into Cook County Jail as part of a scheme orchestrated by an inmate, authorities said.

Dave Compton was arrested Wednesday afternoon after Cook County Sheriff’s officers caught him making a transaction with the unnamed inmate’s girlfriend, Angela Bell, and an undercover officer outside a courtroom at 26th and California, according to prosecutors.

Dave Compton, 60, is facing drug charges that allege he has been smuggling marijuana and cigarettes into the Cook County Jail.

The sheriff’s intelligence unit initiated an investigation when another inmate, Armond Williams, was spotted with a package containing the items on Jan. 7, assistant Cook County state’s attorney Russ Baker said.

Williams told authorities he received the cannabis and loose tobacco from Compton, who got it from Bell.

Bell hid the items in her underwear and was able to pass through the courthouse’s metal detectors, Baker said. She agreed to cooperate with police and was fitted with audio and video equipment when she met with Compton Wednesday.

Compton, prosecutors said, delivered the drugs to different inmates in the jail’s holding cell at least five times, ensuring they would get to the ringleader. Each time Compton met with Bell, she allegedly gave him $250, Baker said.

Compton, of the 9600 block of South Crandon Avenue, was charged with possession of cannabis, delivery of cannabis and bringing contraband into a penal institution.

He was ordered held in lieu of $75,000 bail today.

More arrests are expected, said Steve Patterson, a spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office.
