Guards, inmates face charges in NYC jail death

NEW YORK (AP) – Jail guards and several inmates are facing criminal charges in the beating death of an 18-year-old prisoner at New York City’s Rikers Island.

Prosecutors in the Bronx are expected to announce an indictment Thursday afternoon in the slaying of Christopher Robinson.

Robinson’s family, which has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, claims the guards did nothing while inmates beat and stomped the victim to death last October.

It was the first homicide in city jails in four years.


2 correctional officers charged in bar fight

Two provincial corrections officers have been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection with a fight at a downtown Charlottetown bar.

Michael Andrew Irwin, 29, of Stratford and Nathan Kevin Praught, 22, of Summerside were charged Monday following the incident at St. James Gate on Dec. 13. Both men work at the P.E.I. correctional centre at Sleepy Hollow outside Charlottetown. Continue reading

MDOC ex-officer stole inmate IDs

Former Mississippi Department of Corrections employee Janice Singleton will be sentenced Feb. 27 on federal charges related to using inmates’ records to file false income tax returns and obtain money.
Singleton, 42, a Jackson tax preparer, was a corrections officer at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County prior to her arrest on state charges in February 2007.
