Peoria Cty. Jail officer charged in inmate battery

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A correctional officer has been charged with three felonies for allegedly slapping an inmate at the Peoria County Jail.

Michael Hulse was charged Friday with two counts of official misconduct and one count of aggravated battery. The 29-year-old was arrested on Wednesday at the jail.

Peoria County State’s Attorney Kevin Lyons says Hulse wasn’t acting in self-defense when he battered inmate David Pickett on Dec. 7.

Lyons says Pickett told jail officials about the abuse but it wasn’t reported to prosecutors. He says Lyons lied about the incident until he saw video of it.

Sheriff Mike McCoy says Hulse has received a suspension of 30 days from the jail where he has worked since 2002.

Hulse’s telephone number is unlisted.
