RCI guard allegedly recruited into gang by inmates

MILWAUKEE — A corrections officer allegedly recruited into a gang by inmates pleaded guilty Thursday to a criminal conspiracy charge brought against him in October.

John Champion, 40, of Oak Creek, was charged with party to the crime of conspiracy to deliver illegal articles to an inmate in October. He pleaded guilty Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court to an amended charge of conspiracy to deliver illegal articles to an inmate.

Champion, who worked at Racine Correctional Institution in Sturtevant, is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 3.

According to court documents, Champion allegedly joined the Simon City Royals after meeting an inmate member of the street gang in the spring of 2005. Within months he was going to gang meetings and was invited to participate in them, learn the gang’s prayers and become a member. Continue reading

Correctional Officers Charged With Beating Inmate With Baton

Two correctional officers and a former captain have been charged with assaulting an inmate at Maury Correctional Institution in Greene County.

The State Bureau of Investigation arrested the three Wednesday for the March 2008 assault of inmate David Richardson.

Gregory Beck was a captain and he resigned last year. Sgt. Terry Bell and Officer Brian Bostick were placed on investigatory suspension after their arrest. The three are charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Continue reading

Prisons Official To Plead Guilty To DUI

Undersecretary Scott Kernan Says He Was Suspended 6 Weeks Without Pay

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A high-ranking state prisons official will plead guilty to driving under the influence.

 California Department of Corrections Undersecretary Scott Kernan issued a statement Friday expressing regret for the June 7 incident. He was driving a state vehicle when he was pulled over and taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol along Jackson Highway, just east of Indio Drive.

Kernan said he was suspended without pay for six weeks starting immediately after his arrest. Continue reading

Ex-guard attests to alleged inmate abuse at Westmoreland County Prison

A Westmoreland County Prison inmate was taken out of his cell, punched, choked, kicked and threatened with death as punishment for talking back to a guard, according to a statement given by a corrections officer who said he witnessed the incident.

Part-time guard Christopher Pickard of West Leechburg told investigators that union officials and several other officers concocted a cover story after the assault on James Edwards, 27, and attempted to persuade Pickard to go along with it to derail an internal investigation, according to his written statement.
