Correctional Officers Charged With Beating Inmate With Baton

Two correctional officers and a former captain have been charged with assaulting an inmate at Maury Correctional Institution in Greene County.

The State Bureau of Investigation arrested the three Wednesday for the March 2008 assault of inmate David Richardson.

Gregory Beck was a captain and he resigned last year. Sgt. Terry Bell and Officer Brian Bostick were placed on investigatory suspension after their arrest. The three are charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Continue reading

Guard sprays disabled inmate

RALEIGH — A correctional officer at Central Prison has resigned after spraying disabled inmate Timothy Helms with pepper foam last weekend.

Helms, who suffered severe head injures at a maximum security facility in Taylorsville in August, now lives in the hospital ward at the Raleigh prison.

Keith Acree, spokesman for the state Department of Correction, said that at 3 a.m. Saturday, an officer found Helms beating on the door of the hospital room he shares with four other inmates.

Helms had gotten out of bed, climbed into a wheelchair and then propelled himself to the door, Acree said. Continue reading

Corrections officer arrested for sex crimes

BEAUFORT — A Broad Creek resident was arrested Wednesday for multiple sex crimes, many involving a minor, following an investigation based on information received from an online Internet operation.

Patrick Aaron Wazny, 37, was arrested Wednesday night at his Spruce Pines Drive home and charged with 10 counts of indecent liberties with a child, three counts of statutory sex offense with a minor under the age of 16, two counts of crimes against nature, one count of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

He was arrested by county sheriff’s detectives, the State Bureau of Investigation and the N.C. Internet Crimes against Children Task Force without incident and is currently in the county jail under a $500,000 secured bond.

Mr. Wazny is a state Department of Corrections officer currently stationed at the Pamlico Correctional Facility in Bayboro.

According to a press release from the County Sheriff’s Department, because the incident in under an ongoing investigation, further details are currently unavailable.

Detention Officer Charged With Giving Drugs To Inmate

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — An Alamance County detention officer has been charged with giving drugs to an 18-year-old inmate, department spokesman Randy Jones said.


Jones said Jo Ann Hensley, 58, an employee at the jail for just over five years, gave marijuana to Jean Christopher Jerez, of Graham, sometime between Aug. 11 and 13.


She also gave the teen some other prohibited items, Jones said

She was being held on a $2,500 bond.


Jerez was also charged with possession of a controlled substance on a jail premises.


Hensley was fired from her job, Jones said.
