Former prison guard sentenced to 14 months

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – A former federal prison guard has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for stealing more than $45,000 from a fund set aside for prison staff’s recreational use.

Forty-five-year-old Michael W. Ashley of Terre Haute was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court. He also must serve three years supervised release and pay back the stolen funds.

Ashley, who pleaded guilty to theft, was formerly treasurer of the U.S.P. Employees Club Inc. at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute. The not-for-profit group supported recreational activities for Bureau of Prisons staff.

He wrote checks on the club’s bank account and used its Sam’s Club credit card account for personal purchases.
